FAQs
CLAT — Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Common Law Admission Test — eligibility, exam pattern, syllabus, cut-offs and admissions.
What is CLAT?+
CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is a national-level entrance examination conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities for admission to 5-year integrated undergraduate law programs (BA LLB, BBA LLB, BCom LLB) at 27 NLUs and many private law schools across India.
Who can appear for CLAT?+
Students who have passed (or are appearing in) Class 12 from a recognised board. The general category usually requires 45% marks in Class 12 and SC/ST students 40%. There is no upper age limit.
What is the CLAT exam pattern?+
CLAT UG is a 2-hour offline (pen-and-paper) test with 120 objective-type questions across 5 sections — English Language, Current Affairs & GK, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques. Each question carries 1 mark with 0.25 negative marking.
Is there negative marking in CLAT?+
Yes. Every wrong answer attracts a 0.25 mark deduction, so attempt-strategy and accuracy are critical.
Which NLUs can I get through CLAT?+
Top NLUs include NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, NLU Delhi (via AILET), WBNUJS Kolkata, NLU Jodhpur, GNLU Gandhinagar, HNLU Raipur, RMLNLU Lucknow, RGNUL Patiala (Punjab) and others.
How many seats are available through CLAT?+
Approximately 3,000+ seats are filled through CLAT UG across all participating NLUs, including reserved categories and state quotas.
How is counselling done for CLAT?+
Counselling is centralised and conducted by the Consortium of NLUs. Candidates fill preferences for NLUs and seat allocation happens through a common merit list over multiple rounds.
Is CLAT enough or should I also write AILET, SLAT, CUET?+
We recommend students appear for CLAT as the primary exam and also write AILET (for NLU Delhi), SLAT (Symbiosis), CUET-Law (central universities), AIL LET (Mohali) and NMIMS-LAT as backups. This maximises admission chances.
For official notifications, registration & results, visit the Consortium of NLUs (Official CLAT Portal).
